The first day of the new year is called “元旦”, pronounced ‘gan-tan’, in Japanese and it means the origin and the morning. Interestingly, the second kanji character consists of “日” (the sun or day) and “一” (one or the horizon) then it is said that it means the first morning.
New floral stems of cherry blossoms are already comming up and it would be the right time to start new things.

The chrismas night passed gently as usual and one year is passing again also in Yokohama. Of course, nothing is different from the rest. However, it would be a very interesting week in Japan from a religious point of view.
クリスマスの夜がいつものように静かに過ぎて、ここ横浜でも一年が過ぎていく。もちろん、他と何も変わりはない。だが、宗教的な面から見れば、今週は非常に興味深い週である。
One of my friends, a Catholic, seemed to be busy with preparing the mass last week because he was a caretaker of his church. Then, until the New Year’s Eve after the christmas, many of temples of Buddhism are coming to be busy for preparing the bells on New Year’s Eve. A lot of people visit a temple midnight of the last day and hear 108 times bell ringing. At the new year morning, it will be a time to visit a shrine of the Shinto.
友人のひとりはカソリックで教会の世話役だったため、先週はミサの準備で大変忙しかったようだ。そして、そのクリスマスから大晦日までは多くの寺がその準備で忙しくなる。多くのひとが最後の日の深夜に寺を訪ね、除夜の鐘を聞く。新年の朝は、神社に詣でる時である。
Interestingly most of people don’t care the religion. Everybody enjoys his way of New Year’s Eve and the new morning.
興味深いことに、ほとんど誰も宗派などは気にしていない。誰もがその人なりの方法で年末年始を楽しんでいる。
A thorough year end cleanup would be one of good Japanese customs gradually being missed especially in city area. Originally it had a meaning of having a new year without the past impure life.
Today I introduce how to clean a keyboard. Please note that the way I did may not be suitable for yours. Most of keyboards used in laptop computers are frangible compared with classical one for desktop PCs and it may have different architecture.
大掃除の季節というわけで、パソコンのキーボードを掃除する方法をご紹介。ただし、必ずしも他のキーボードにも適用可能とは限らないのでご注意を。特にノートPCは壊れやすく構造も違う場合が多いのでおすすめしない。
Before starting, I strongly recommend you take a fine picture of your keyboard. Useless? Yeah, You know it’s qwerty but some keyboards have irregular keys. Also, you want to see how it was, don’t you.
作業を始める前に、写真を撮っておくことを強くお勧めする。キー配列など普段使っているから分かっているだろうが、変なキー配列も少なからずあるし、なんと言っても最後に比べたくなるから損はない。
Okay, ready to start. The first step is to remove all keycaps with care. Usually these small parts are made of plastics and broken easily. You shouldn’t try too hard to do using leverage. One of the way to do it easier is to use two screwdrivers. The most important thing is that you pull a key vertically. You could buy a key puller if needed.
準備OK。最初のステップは注意深く全部のキーを外すこと。普通はプラスチックで出来ているので壊れやすい。梃子を使って無理にやってはいけない。簡単に外す方法のひとつは、2本のドライバーを使うこと。最も重要なのは、垂直に引っ張ることだ。必要ならキーリムーバーなるものを買っても良い。
Finished? You may see something unexpected on your bare keyboard. It is unlikely that you find the ring you missed two years ago. Instead, you might see a crumb of potato chips. You must not turn your eyes away from it. It’s time to clean up. Of course you should not wash it but wipe it with a damp cloth carefully.
終わった？もしかしたら裸になったキーボードに意外なものを見つけるってこともある。ただ、2年前に失くした指輪が出てきたなどということはありそうにもない。ポテトチップのかけらの類だろう。ここで目をそむけてはならないまさにきれいにする時が来た。もちろん洗うのではなく、絞った雑巾で注意深く拭くべきである。
It is easier to clean keycaps because usually there’s no electronic parts. You can wash them by water. When you find a metallic wire which is used for large keys sometimes, I recommend not to use water. I forgot to tell you one thing. The number of keys is more than 100! It may take long time. Keyboard plaques are very sticky.
キーそのものを掃除するのはもっと簡単だ。キーには普通は電子部品がないからだ。水洗いしても良い。大きなキーに時々使われる金属ワイヤーを見つけたら、水を使うのは避けた方が良い。ひとつ伝えるのを忘れていた。キーの数は100以上ある。洗うのには時間がかかるかも知れない。キーボード汚れは落ちにくいのだ。
It’s time to stroll out with a camera or to prepare your lunch because keycaps may be still wet. Anyway when you think it’s enough dry, it’s time to fix all key caps referring the picture you took.
さて、カメラを持ってぶらぶら歩いてくるか、ランチの準備でもする時がきた。キーはまだ濡れているかもしれないのだ。ともかくも、十分乾いたと思ってから、最初に撮った写真を元にキーを戻すのがよい。

When I travel unfamiliar places, I always get the urge to take a picture of transportation system. I don’t know the reason but time to time I found myself shooting buses, trains, boats or airplanes. Of course, the shape of bus in Yokohama where I live is mostly same as what you see in the rest of the world; boxy, having four or six wheels, square windows etc. Perhaps, small differences might arouse the traveler’s sentiment to me.
不慣れな場所を旅する時、いつも交通に関する写真を撮りたくなる。理由は分からないが、時々バスやら電車やら船やら飛行機やらと写真を撮っている自分に気づく。もちろん住んでいる横浜のバスは、世界中の他のバスとほとんど変わりはない。角張っていて、4つか6つのタイヤがあって、窓は四角。ひょっとすると小さな違いが旅情のようなものをひきおこすのかもしれない。

長距離便の機内では、アニメーション映画を見ることも多い。あるいは、正直あまり面白いと思ったこともないものの、いわゆるマンガをもとにした映画を見ることもある。暇つぶしということもある。だが、どちらかと言えば、折角の機会だから見てみたいといった理由である。妙なアクションサスペンスを見るより明らかにその回数は多い。
ところがである。マンガそのものが実は苦手である。そもそもイメージが湧かないから、なんとなくストーリーを追っているだけになってしまう。何故か動きのあるシーンが止まっているように見えたり、会話が不自然に見えたりと絵の中に入り込めないこともある。その点、風刺画や4コマ漫画はそのものズバリでまだ読みやすい。どうやら、連載マンガの類がだめらしいのだ。最近は電車で雑誌としてのマンガを読んでいる人も少なくなったような気がするが、たまに熱心に読んでいる人を横からそっと見て、純粋にすごいなと感じてしまう。
もちろん、マンガは日本固有のものではない。ベルギーにはバンドデシネ（タンタンが有名）と呼ばれるマンガの文化がしっかり根付いているし、いわゆるアメリカンコミックは指摘するまでもない。もはや明確に文化としての歴史と位置を持っている。こうなると、アニメーションではなく、マンガを楽しめないのは少々残念でもある。
最近は日本のマンガが一定の評価を得て、フランスあたりでは、若い層を中心に多くの読者がいる。先日も知人のフランス人が頼まれて数十冊のマンガを買ったとのことで、スーツケースに入らないからそれでも半分諦めたと話していた。やれやれ。どこまでブームは続くのか、マンガを読まない身としては、半ばあきれ顔で驚くしかない。いまや、地方都市にも専門店があり、ひょっとすると文化として定着するのだろうか。本の左右の開きの違いから、フランス語訳ではなく日本語で読む人も少なくないから、マンガで日本語の勉強をして、妙に今風な日本語を話す生粋のフランス人が現れるのは時間の問題だろう。変な日本語を覚えなければ良いが。
