“Is it really that hot in Japan?” It’s been a hot summer to say the least. It might be strange to say, “It’s only 31 degrees centigrade today, isn’t it cool?” Commuters swaying on the crowded train in the morning, even though the air conditioning was on, everyone wiped their sweat with handkerchiefs, took off their masks that they stick to wear, and cursed. “This year is abnormal. It wasn’t this hot last year.” When I talked to my my colleague like that, he will say it coldly with a disgusted look. “You came back to Japan in July last year. Last year, June was hot like summer, and in July it was all rain. Same in August. That was weird.” Somehow I felt strange when I’m told as if I’m weird. Anyway, a hot summer has just started.
Around one year has passed after having moved back to Yokohama from heart-warming and beautiful Brittany. A lot of unexpected things happened and eventually I have found calmness called daily life.
Before, I was believing that goodness and badness were relative feelings. When I was facing difficulties, I thought it may have a good aspect. Probably it is true. However I learnt. What I am seeing is from what I experienced. I cannot see what I haven’t experienced. Everyone needs to do it again and again before learning anything. When I say it’s relatively bad or something, probably I should add ‘compared with experience’ in my mind. When I think Japan is easy or hard to live in, I might be seeing just a small face of it based on my experience. In other words, it is always not true that Japan is better or worse than France. You may think it is ambivalent but consistent for me. After having learnt that, both two countries have become fantastic place for me.
The usual Yokohama is finally back. Some people say that after three strange years of hard days, life has returned to normal, but I may have forgotten what it was like at that time. Three years ago, I was in Europe watching a TV news report about a large number of infected people on a large cruise ship from Hong Kong. The ship had dropped into the port of Yokohama to receive medical assistance but, for me, it didn’t sound real thing. Then, two weeks ago, 6 large ships entered Yokohama Port at the same day and many tourists were enjoying their vacation. The usual Yokohama is finally back.
