Anonymous said, colour of autumn leaves in Japan was red, and the rest is yellow. I don’t agree. Autumn colors are various and filled with a lot of colours on our planet. However, it is true that red is a kind of dominant colour at least around Tokyo because of cherry trees, dodan-tsutsuji (Enkianthus perulatus) and such street plants. In addition, late autumn weather is usually dry and clear then you may see some orange skies both in a morning and evening. And, needless to say, it is a good moment.

　俯くサザンカを見ながら、そろそろストーブでも出すかなあなんて考えては見たものの、毎年同様に、ストーブを出すのが面倒だからつい先送りしてしまう。それでもまもなく欲しくなって、慌てて出すのが石油ストーブだ。

　今どき化石燃料というのも時代にそぐわないが、灯油は燃料を精製した残り滓みたいなものとも言うし（実際にはそうでもない）、電気は停電すれば使えないので、このところは必ず対流ストーブを持ち出している。まあ、言い訳みたいなものである。人間、時には言い訳がないと生きていけないこともある。

　先日所用があって北関東に出かける機会があった。観光地の駐車場に車を停めてひと休みをしたのだが、11月の前半だというのに、観光案内所は石油ストーブを焚いていた。北関東は朝晩が寒いのだ。それを見ながらやっぱりストーブ出しておかなきゃなあなんて考えた。

　かつては雪の降る地域に住んでいたこともあるので、石油ストーブは案外身近な存在である。割高じゃない？なんて知人にも言われるが、南関東で補助的に使うならそもそも使う絶対量が少ないから、さほど高い訳でもない。しかも、である。ヤカンを乗せておけば、お湯も沸くし、干し芋なんてのも温められる。えっ、そこが狙い？いやいや、時には言い訳が必要なのだ。

As winter approaches, the world tends to turn brown, but late autumn in Tokyo is surprisingly full of red. Sometimes the red nuts shine in the sun under the blue sky, and sometimes the dry sky at dusk is dyed red. In a sense, it also means that we will soon feel the crispness of the cold morning air. A medieval poet once wrote, “Mornings are the best in winter,” and I agree, because it gets warmer during the day.
