A metallic plant blooms beside a narrow, inorganic path between a tennis court and unused land above a concrete flood control basin. However, what is not widely known is that the plant is edible.

コンクリートで出来た遊水池の上のテニスコートと未利用地の間に続く無機質な小道の脇に、金属のような植物が花を咲かせる。その植物が食べられることは案外知られていない。

　門前町とはお寺さんの周りに発展した街のことだが、この写真の場所は城下町の中のまさに城の下にあるお寺さんの前の通りなので、門前と言われる通りである。こうした裏路地にはどういうわけか猫がのんびりしていることになっていて、この猫も横を誰かが通り抜けても気にすることなく休んでいた。

A temple town is a town that develops around a temple, and the location of this photo is a street in front of a temple located directly below the castle within the castle town, so it is a street that is called a front-of-temple street. For some reason, cats are known to hang out in these back street, and that cat was resting there without seeming to mind someone walking past him.

この隣の通りは、子供の頃には決して近づくなと言われた場所なのだが、確かに小さな飲み屋がいくつかあって、あまり子供の行く場所ではなかったように記憶している。

This neighboring street is a place that I was told never to go near when I was a child, and I do remember that there were a few small bars there, and it wasn’t really a place that kids would go.

　ある日、友達がいい加減なもんじゃ焼きの店に連れて行ってくれたことがある。確か私はまだ10歳かそれ以下だった。その友達はそこのすぐ隣に住んでいたのだ。子供心に何か危険なものがあるのか​​なと思ったりもしたが、何も起こらなかった。

One day one of my friends took me there to eat a local junk food. Probably I was 10 years old or younger. He lived just next block. I wondered if it could be danger. However, nothing happened.

　大人になって気がつけば、そこはさほど危険な通りでもないし、近年はおしゃれなカフェもできて観光客が立ち寄るような場所になっていた。

As I grew up, I realized that it wasn’t such a dangerous street after all, and in recent years, stylish cafes have opened there, making it a popular spot for tourists.

そんな裏通りの風景は、もはや何ひとつ覚えていなかったし、少し疲れた自分にとっては、何もノスタルジックを感じるようなこともなかった。少しだけ体を休め、次の場所へと移動した。

I no longer remembered anything about the backstreet scenery, and feeling a little tired, it didn’t bring any nostalgia to me. I rested for a bit and then moved on to the next location.

　考えてみれば門前町は観光地とかではなく、そのお寺に関わる人の住む街なのであって、生活の場でもあったはずだ。いつの間にか観光客になった自分は、その街にはもう関わりがないのだなと気がついた。

It is true that temple towns are not tourist destinations, but towns where people related to the temple live, and they should have been places of daily life. I realized that I had become a tourist without realizing it, and that I no longer had any connection to the town.

　用事を済ませてその街から帰る時、そばの花が美しく風に吹かれていた。

While I was returning back from the town after running some errands, the buckwheat flowers were blowing beautifully in the wind.

Floral Friday #224

　色々と面倒なことが続いた一週間が終わると、一息つくよりも次のことを考えるのは現代人の悪い癖か。貯湯槽の補修代の請求書が届いていないなとか、病院の予約は何時だったかなとか、そろそろ契約処理の連絡が来ても良い頃だなとか、休みの日にはちょっと贅沢なものでも食べに行きたいなとか、延々と考えている。そういえば葛の蔓が伸びてきてたから切らなきゃなんて思い出すと、慌ててTODOリストに書き加えるのだが、それで安心すると美容院の予約の時間が気になり出す。たまにはのんびり何も考えない時間を作った方が良い。何もしない時間は頑張れば作れるのだが、何も考えない時間というのは難しいのだ。

　まだまだ晴れの日があるとはいえ、もう５月の半ばから梅雨入りしたみたいな横浜。そんな曇りや雨の日の隙間時間に無機質なコンクリートが並ぶ場所を通れば、不意に路傍に咲く花を見つけたりする。その写真を撮りながら、錆びたガードレールの模様が面白くなって写真を撮り直す。そしてふと思うのだ。

　「考えすぎだって。」

　そんな週末が過ぎていく。
