LAPC – Spiritual Sites

You may not see anything special from the picture but the place is called Saji-on (中筋御嶽) of Taketomi island, a place of worship. The island is a part of Yaeyama islands of Okinawa prefecture in Japan where it is located just next to Taiwan. ‘On’ (御嶽) is also known as ’Utaki’ in other places but it has same meaning. Honestly saying, I haven’t seen also anything there because entering ‘On’ is prohibited to men. All I could do was to see the path to ‘On’. Even if you are woman, I don’t recommend to step into. It is a place for praying but not for sightseeing.

Since last Saturday, all photos I have posted were taken at Yaeyama islands. The last one is at bottom.

Why are people attracted to dark and humid caves even though they feel awe?
Maybe it’s because the other side looks like a bright and fun place.

どうして人は、畏怖を感じながらも暗く湿った洞窟に惹かれるのか？
向こう側が明るくて楽しい場所に見えるからなのか。

Pourquoi les gens sont-ils attirés par les grottes sombres et humides même s’ils sont émerveillés ?
C’est peut-être parce que l’autre côté ressemble à un endroit lumineux et amusant.

　無数の歯車がガタガタと時を動かす昼間の時間が立ち止まる音を立てるようにリュウキュウアカショウビンがキロロロと声を響かせ、日の沈んだ後の漆黒の湿気がスッと溶け落ちる様にヤエヤマヒメボタルがつぼみのような光を揺らし始めるうりずんの頃、月桃のオレンジ色に輝く花がうつむきながら開き始める。それが八重山の一番良い季節らしい。暑過ぎず過ごしやすい季節だからと伝えるガイドブックも、天気がぐずつきやすい冬が終わり台風の時期にはまだ早いからと説明するWebサイトもその通りだが、何よりも静かでエメラルド色に染まる海と頭のてっぺんからつま先まで照らす太陽がそこにあるからでもある。

　何度か沖縄を訪れたことがあるというのに、季節のことなどまともに考えたことなどなかった。少なくとも数日を過ごすことのできる休暇といつもより幾分多くかかる費用とを算段して日程が決まり、それからその季節はどうなんだろうと考える。ホテルのとれたこの日あたりは西風が寒くないかな？この頃はそろそろ台風の季節だよね。もうパイナップルは終わりかも。いつも順番が逆なのだ。こんな季節に行きたいなんて計画するのは簡単ではない。

　そもそも沖縄本島と八重山諸島の区別だってあやしいものだ。那覇から400kmも離れた石垣島に行くというのに、那覇は明後日から雨らしいなんて会話をしていたりもする。八重山諸島はそれほど日常を過ごす横浜から遠く離れた場所なのだ。楽園とは現実から遠いもの。たとえそこに生活する人が様々な現実に直面していようとも。

　ベタベタと首の周りにまとわりつく海風と月桃色に染まった島陰とが曖昧につながって、やがて島の深緑の土に染み込んでいく夕暮れ。旅人は日常を忘れ、世話をやいてくれる島の人たちを頼って一日を終えようとする。美しい季節にここにいられて良かったと、独言るのは都会の慣わし。明日を生きる術。

It was only five years ago that I wondered what day of the week it was while walking down a road in the strong SoCal sun. It should be instant in aspect of astronomy but almost eternal for me, perhaps also for you.
