It was a somewhat unusual year. In 2023, after returning from France, I worked full-time in Japan, took almost a month’s vacation, and moved to a new job. So, I have selected some photos that I took during my off time.

The photo above was taken in Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan. Spending your meal time in a different place, with different food, and in a different way is a great way to break out of the mundane. There was a canal between the restaurant and me, with small boats passing by.

The photo below was taken in the Okinawa region, the southernmost tip of Japan. It was a very relaxing time just looking at the calm sea.

The last photo was taken in Kanagawa Prefecture, where I live. I knew there were orange groves, but I didn’t know they were so sweet. Interestingly, some of the orchards have farmers’ stands where you can pick your own, and I ate lots of oranges there while looking out at the beautiful sea.

As you know, those are not my favorite shots but favorite places I’ve been last year.

2023年はいつもと違う年だった。 フランスから帰国後、完全に1年間日本で働き、ほぼ1か月の休暇を取り、新しい仕事を始めた年だった。 ということで、オフタイムに撮った写真をいくつか選んでみた。

上の写真は日本の最北端、北海道で撮影したものだ。 いつもと違う場所で、いつもと違う食材を、いつもと違う方法で食事する時を過ごすことは、日常から抜け出す素晴らしい方法だ。このレストランと私の間には運河があり、小さな船が行き交っていた。

下の写真は、日本の最南端である沖縄で撮影した。 穏やかな海を眺めているだけでとても癒される時間だった。

最後の写真は住んでいる神奈川県で撮った。 ミカン園があるのは知っていたが、こんなに甘いとは知らなかった。 興味深いことに、果樹園の中には観光農園をしているところがあり、そこで美しい海を眺めながらみかんをたくさん食べた。

I was walking through a public garden with a small wooded area with a path when I heard a knock overhead. The sound was made by a red-bellied woodpecker.

Walking while looking at the trees is also fun. The photo below was taken a few years ago in Brittany, where I used to live. There was a European red squirrel looking down at me in the woods right next to my house.

One day, as I was walking along the forest road as usual, I came to a well-maintained garden area and couldn’t help but look down at it. And I found it. The scenery between the branches looked a little strange. I was confused. Everything has been turned upside down. It was a moment. After a few seconds I was back to normal.

Of course, it was just a false sense. As you can see above, there were stones floating there and the sky was falling. But maybe it was true, because I…

木々を見上げながら歩くのは楽しみの一つだ。 下の写真は数年前住んでいたブルターニュで撮ったものだ。 家のすぐ近くの森でヨーロッパ・アカリスが私を見下ろしていた。

One, two, three, four, five, seven… Small kids sometime forget to say six while counting sweet candies. That’s not an issue for them because, as you know, the number of candies in front of them cannot be different as they see. They just forgot to say ‘six’ which was brandnew for them until two weeks ago.
It have been exceptionally hot in Japan last month I was always wearing T-shirt. Indeed, it was 25 to 30 C and some news show reported it was record breaking. However, suddenly, it has been going down from summer days to wintertime suddenly. Sometimes it is 8 degree in a morning. Where is sweet autumn? Someone foregets to count autumn?
Unfortunately, it is not so easy to find red and yellow autumn leaves this year because of extreamly long and hot summer. Leaves of cherry trees aleady fell down before turing to be red. Most of Japanese maples look brown.

1、2、3、4、5、7… 小さな子供たちは、甘いキャンディーを数えているときに、6 と言うのを忘れることがあります。 目の前にあるキャンディーの数が子供達の目に見えているものと違うわけではないので、言い忘れたことには何の問題もありません。 2週間前まで真新しいことだった「6」という言葉を言うのを忘れただけです。
先月の日本は異常に暑かったので、いつもTシャツを着ていました。 実際、気温は25度から30度で、ニュース番組などでは記録的だと報道されていました。 しかし、突然、夏から冬へと気温が下がってきました。 朝の気温は一桁になることもあります。 あの甘い秋はどこに行ったのでしょう？ 秋を数え忘れたのでしょうか？
残念ながら、今年は非常に長く暑い夏で、美しい紅葉を見つけるのは簡単ではありません。 桜の木はまだ紅葉する前に葉が落ちてしまいました。 イロハモミジのほとんどは茶色に見えます。

A face of animals including human usually has symmetry in nature in terms of its shape. Few exception may be seen in a shape of a flounder or a calling crab. I don’t know why, but I imagine that we are drawn to symmetry because it helps us notice dangers in the natural world. You may find a face-like shape on the left photo.
I saw a shape of elephant back in the photo at bottom. Do you see anything?
