Lens-Artists Challenge #311: What’s in a Garden?

Now, it’s not a good time to visit any gardens in Japan. The temperature is extreme and exceptionally high for one month compared to common years. The weather forecasting company says it is indeed 4-5 degrees Celsius (7-9 degrees Fahrenheit) higher. When I visited the garden shown in the photo above, it was 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). I could say it is crazy. I gave up on staying there just to take photos. The next photo was taken at the Japanese Pear Orchard next to the garden. I returned to my car right after taking this photo for the record.

I would like to show a bottom picture taken last summer. A picture itself looks not so beautiful. You would see one butterfly and quiet flowers. I prefer to those type of garden. It was rather natural and wild. The flowers were indigo, which is completely different from the color we know. In fact, indigo is made from leaves. And the important thing is that the temperature was below 25 degrees.

夏の境界

踏みつけられた玉砂利がコクっと不平を言う夏、
僅かに外側に捩れた踵に痛みを感じる昼下がり、
固く閉ざされたパン屋の頑なな扉を無意に押す。
マロニエの実が成るにはまだ遠い乾いた晩夏と、
ラベンダーの青が鼻腔に染みて光転げる初夏と、
その狭間に落ちた夏休みの静けさに溜息を吐く。

青の深淵で沈黙する溶鉱炉から金属の熱を吐く、
蟻よりも甘苦い汁がシミを残すことなく乾く夏。
誰もがソワソワと終わりない仕事を睨む初夏と、
不用意に出来た踵の傷の赤い線を摩る昼下がり。
誰ひとり返事をしないメールを選分ける晩夏と、
他人事になった秋を思い溜息を吐く明日を押す。

セスティーナ（sestina）を書くには少々準備不足というものだが、書きかけの作品の習作とするならば理解してもらえるだろうか。
夏のブルターニュは朝の最低気温が20度、夕方の最高気温が28度というところだが、湿度が低いためカラッとした暑さで爽やかである。時々スペインからの熱波が到達して35度くらいまで上がることもないことはないが、それも数日。朝はしっかり気温が下がるので、冷房はほとんどいらない。乾いている分だけ日差しは強い。日本の夏のような真上から熱せられる溶鉱炉のような暑さはないが、さして強くもない日差しに油断すると紫外線で目も腕も痛むことになる。
そんな夏を楽しもうと思っても、リゾートでもない普通の都市部は閑散としている。パン屋も店を閉めてバカンスに行ってしまうし、街のイベントも旧市街で観光客向けのものが少しある程度なので、街中でやることもない。バカンスの時期は、夏の境界線上にある谷間にストンと落ちてしまったようだ。日本とブルターニュの間で仕事をしていると、なんとも溜息が出る動けない時期である。

Je ne sais pas si vous êtes comme moi, mais quand je pénètre dans ces serres et que je vois ces plantes étranges des pays exotiques, il me semble que j’entre dans un rêve. 
あなたも同じかどうかわかりませんが、温室でエキゾチックな国からの植物を見ていると、夢の中を歩いているような気がします。

アンリ・ルソー

　元祖ヘタウマなどと誉めているのか貶しているのか分からないことも言われるルソーだが、間違いなく夢の中でも歩いているような独特の世界観を見せてくれる。やれ立体感がないとか、人間の形が変だとか、何を描いているのか分からないとか、そういうどう考えてもまともじゃない絵を日曜日の趣味みたいに描き、仕事といえば税関職員だったなんて、歩くアバンギャルドだ。今だったら絵描きというよりイラストレーターに近い感じもするが、実際のところ商用などでは全くない絵だったから画家以外の何者でもない。
　そのアンリルソーを誰もが認めたのは死後であって、早い段階から支持者はいたものの、評価される類の絵などではなかったらしい。今となっては歴史に残る作品となった「眠るジプシー女」は売れない困窮の中で描いたと言われているし、売れないから絵で支払ったという話もある。そもそも絵で支払ったなんて困窮画家の典型的な話のようだが、受け取った側はキャンバスに価値があって絵にはいらなかったとか。
　ルソーといえばジャングルをテーマにした作品も多く、その熱帯の森をどこで見たのかということも話題となる。最近の研究では若い頃に軍隊で行ったメキシコという説は否定され、パリ植物園ということだったらしい。上の言葉はそのことを語っているのだろうか。
　ルソーの集大成といえば、言わずと知れた「夢」である。このジャングルの層が重なったような絵と「蛇使いの女」の印象がよほど強かったのか、ルソーと言うとどこかジャングルに蛇がいるようなそんなイメージが湧いてくる。実際にはそんな絵はないと思うのだが、頭の中に思い浮かぶルソーがそれなのである。
　冒頭の写真は、そんなイメージを狙って撮ってみた。と言うより、光が熱帯的だななんて思っていたらカナヘビがやってきたから、これはラッキーと撮ってみた写真である。

Lens-Artists Challenge #306: Habitat

There are no new photos in this challenge. All the photos were taken in France, where I used to live.

In the beginning of period I lived there, I didn’t see any squirrels around my place. Some of my co-workers told me that there were plenty of squirrels just next to me even when I was at urban area. It was a challenging and strange message to me. I didn’t see any of them at all. Perhaps, I didn’t have good eyes?

A year later, I was walking in the woods, and suddenly a squirrel appeared in front of me. It was not the acorn season, so it must have been busy collecting food. After this sudden encounter, I started seeing squirrels almost every day. There were a lot of squirrels in the immediate vicinity.
