月明かりがまだ眩しい早朝の住宅街に、金木犀の甘く冷たい香りが滲み出していたのは、たった2週間前だった。鼻腔の奥に少し湿った空気とその日にしなければならない事への躊躇が詰まっているような気がして、なんだか落ち着かない朝だった。過ぎて仕舞えばなんでもないことなのに、予定がわかっているとどこかで人は躊躇するものなのだ。だから忙しさにかまけて気づかずにいた金木犀の花が唐突に咲いたのは、少し驚くと同時にどこか安堵することでもあった。誰かが歯車を回し続けているのか、時は進み、もう来ないと思っていた秋がやってきていた。
