四季桜（shiki-cherry）

Shiki-zakura, literally ‘four-seasons’ cherry blossom in Japanese, is always blooming from October to May, but not in summer at least around Tokyo. It should be too hot. Perhaps, it may bloom in summer in northern Europe. When we say cherry blossom, it blooms at the end of March typically and it is about well-knows ‘Somei-yoshino’ cherry blossom. Everybody is looking forward to seeing it. However my favorite is rather those ‘shiki-zakura’ type of blossoms because it brings a sort of calmness and gentleness.

　四季桜は、文字通り「四季」の桜で、10月から5月まで咲き続けますが、少なくとも東京周辺では夏には咲きません。暑すぎるのでしょう。もしかしたら、北部ヨーロッパでは夏にも咲くのかもしれません。桜といえば、言わずと知れた「ソメイヨシノ」のことを指しますが、むしろ「四季桜」のような花が好みです。穏やかで優しい佇まいではありませんか。
