頰をまるで卵をそのまま含んだかのように思いきりふくらませ口をとがらせた冬の神が、地球のてっぺんで冷やしたとっておきの氷の風を吹きつける。慌てた南洋の女神は思わず熱く湿った息を吐きだし、白の蒸気と黒の蒸気とがせめぎあう蠢く雲となって雨粒を落とす。行き場のない風はその場で渦巻き、遠く低い咆哮があたりを埋め尽くす。
ガラス窓をカタカタと鳴らす見えない戦いから目を逸らし、人は強固な屋根の下で明日の陽射しを想い続ける。クローゼットの奥から取り出したバッグは一瞬黒く艶やかに輝きはするが、湿った皮は間も無く薄い水滴の膜に覆われる。その表面を指でなぞってついた線を眺め、息を吐きだし、テーブルから読みさしの本を引き寄せる。明日の予報は曇り。秋薔薇はようやく開き始めた。
秋の嵐は、案外春よりも大きな爪痕を残すものである。もちろん誰も風神が強風を引き起こしているなどと考えはしない。それは単に、たとえば南の海の湿った熱い空気と大陸の乾いた冷たい空気がぶつかり合って、そこに雨雲が生まれるという物理現象でしかない。そう分かっていても、丁寧に育てられた秋薔薇の花弁に無残な傷痕を見つけた時、何か不思議な力を感じるのである。
秋の薔薇は、台風をくぐり抜け、長雨に耐え、ようやく花を開く。ちょうど涼しくなった空気に、長い期間より強い香りも放つ。であれば、今週は薔薇の写真でも。
